Personal Development Through the Sport of Jiu Jitsu

Personal Development Through the Sport of Jiu Jitsu

Many times I've heard the phrase, "Jiu Jitsu will smash your ego." While I agree to some extent, I believe it goes much deeper than that.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a difficult martial art. Progress is slow, promotions take time, and in a world of instant gratification, it teaches us to focus on the process rather than the outcome.

If your only goal is the next stripe or belt, you may miss the everyday lessons.

Training teaches us how we respond to challenges, manage our emotions, work with different body types and experience levels, build relationships, and adapt to gradual physical, mental, and personal growth.

The blue belt journey

As a blue belt, I struggled mentally and emotionally. I believed that because I had earned the belt, I should be performing better than I was. I often left training feeling frustrated and discouraged. Over time, my performance improved, and I realised how much my confidence was tied to my results.

During this period, I was competing regularly, and my competition results had a major impact on my self-esteem. Through that experience, I learned that when self-worth depends on performance, it rests on unstable foundations. It took much of the joy out of training.

Finding freedom beyond results

Eventually, I realised that my worth was never determined by achievements, medals, or promotions. It is something I was born with and cannot be increased or diminished by success or failure. That understanding was incredibly freeing.

Your worth is something you were born with — it cannot be increased or diminished by success or failure.

I began to enjoy training again, built stronger relationships on and off the mat, and became more aware of the negative stories and comparisons in my mind. That awareness became one of the greatest lessons Jiu Jitsu gave me.

Why we need tools like Jiu Jitsu

I believe we need tools like BJJ to challenge us, support our growth, and connect us with communities that help us become better versions of ourselves.

If you're curious about starting your own journey, come and try a class at Grow Jiu Jitsu. Everyone is welcome, whatever your experience level.
